Hike or cross-country ski the Birdsong Trail in Mendon Ponds Park but stop at the nature center building before heading out to get a handful of sunflower seeds. The chickadees will land on your outstretched hand to eat the seeds.
Additional Great Resource: Rich and Sue Freeman, local authors and owners of Footprint Press, have a great book called Snow Trails: Cross-country Ski and Snowshoe in Central New York and Western New York. Snow Trails details over 80 mapped locations for cross-country skiing and winter hiking. Directions are given to winter parking areas, and each trail is described by length and level of difficulty. You’ll learn where to find groomed trails, seldom used trails, or popular trails with added amenities such as warming huts, refreshments, restrooms, guided tours, and sleigh rides. It's a must if you're serious about outdoor fun in the Rochester area. You can order it directly from the press, or from your local book store. Click here to order it directly from Footprint Press. This page on their web site even has a free map showing the locations of 78 great winter trails in the Rochester area.
